This is the flagship bourbon from Buffalo Trace. It's made from mash bill #1, just like Eagle Rare, Taylor and Stagg. It's younger than Eagle Rare, but it's bottled at the same proof. It's about the same age as Taylor Small Batch, but it's not bottled in bond. It's about the same age as Stagg, Jr., but it's not barrel proof. Hence, one would expect the flagship Buffalo Trace to be of lower quality but still hold its own as a daily drinker served neat. It's readily available and it's affordable. Of course, it won't last long in the liquor store, because it has the name of the world's most award winning distillery on the bottle. Can the flagship Buffalo Trace deliver the goods at a reasonable price?
Color: Light orange
Body: Medium
Nose: Raisin, fruity but weaker than Eagle Rare, sweetened cereal, frosted Raisin Bran
Palate: A tad bit grainy, relatively non-descript but pleasant, more raisin notes, caramel, rye spice, caraway seed
Finish: Short to medium, fades quickly, left with sweetened cereal
Score: Jack
Song: The Great White Buffalo - The Amboy Dukes
So far on Bourbon Roxx, we've spent our entire time reviewing Buffalo Trace bourbons. I receive no compensation from the distillery. I just believe it's the greatest distillery on Earth. Straight up, they produce the best bourbons. You know I love "Pappy". You know I love the BTAC. You know I love Weller, Stagg, Taylor, Eagle Rare and Blanton's, but what about the flagship bourbon? Does the namesake Buffalo Trace live up to the distillery's hype? The answer is yes, because the flagship bourbon doesn't receive the same hype as its more expensive brethren. Buffalo Trace is what it is, a daily drinker which will satisfy your desire for an above average bourbon but never leave you astonished. All the bourbon flavors are here, but they're somewhat subdued. There's nothing Earth shattering, but it's pleasant. Probably, the most interesting note is the hint of caraway seed, which gives a sweetened rye bread flavor. The flagship Buffalo Trace is the most affordable bourbon from the distillery worth drinking neat, though it's better suited for cocktails. Picking a song to pair with this bourbon was easy. Listen to The Great White Buffalo by The Amboy Dukes, and enjoy Ted Nugent's guitar work.
