Weller Bourbon Flight

Weller Bourbon Flight

Weller Flight

Introduction

In this flight, I compared the mid-range bourbons in the Weller line from Buffalo Trace. I didn’t include the William LaRue Weller from the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, and I didn’t include the two entry level Weller bourbons, Special Reserve and Antique 107. This is the standard line of wheated bourbons from Buffalo Trace. They share the same mash bill as the venerable Van Winkle bourbons. They vary in proof and age. You can read and watch my individual reviews of each of these bourbons. Here, they are compared side by side.

3. (tie) Weller Aged 12 Years

4. (tie) Weller Full Proof

Discussion

How about that? A tie for third. Let me explain. When I did the individual reviews, I was less impressed with the C.Y.P.B. and the Single Barrel. I didn’t think the C.Y.P.B. was the perfect bourbon, and I didn’t understand the purpose of the Single Barrel. I liked the 12 Year and the Full Proof. They have more traditional flavors, but I thought the 12 Year needed a higher proof, and I thought the Full Proof needed more age. When I did the head to head flight, I had a different experience. I was actually impressed with the more interesting flavors of the C.Y.P.B. and the Single Barrel. The 12 Year and the Full Proof were still traditional bourbons, but they each lacked that particular characteristic that the other one possessed. I put them in a tie for third place, but I decided to blend them for another video, to see if I could create a better version. Perhaps, balancing the age and proof could craft the perfect mid-range Weller.
